PATRICK PORTER /   A SWAN AT SMILEY'S
DETAILS: ASA063  /  CDR  /  $5
RELEASED: April 1st, 2008
DESCRIPTION: A Swan At Smiley's is a track record of a hot, dizzy summer spent in a basement apartment on Colfax Avenue, Denver, Colorado. I had just arrived home from an ugly year in New York City, living on the edge of the Bronx with a weird ballerina girl who fed me rice cakes and tamarind kool-aid all the time. I abandoned all hope all ye who enter ETC out there and flew home to Colorado, where I woozily established myself in the aforementioned apartment, a tiny space with creaking, warped floorboards, dripping ceiling pipes, and two tiny windows that looked right out on Colfax— clomping sneakers, bus stop benches, and sirens--- just at the corner of the Royal Host Motel and Smiley's Laundromat, which is, the sign says, the World's Biggest. NEW GRENADA /   MODEL CITIZEN EP
DETAILS: ASA062  /  CD  /  $5
RELEASED: March 4th, 2008
DESCRIPTION: Energized by their recent downsizing to a three-piece and the rush they felt recording with Steve Albini, a spark was lit underneath the rears of New Grenada, and soon a bevy of new songs started pouring out. This new EP is their first without Shawn and their first as fully functional, real-life adults. Their newfound exuberance shines bright, and you can hear it bleeding from every orifice of these four new songs. From the world-weary paranoia that laces "January 1st" to the critiques on scene politics on "My Spirits Go Down Along With the Sun" and "I Will Let You Know Why", New Grenada shows that though they've aged, they are still as full of piss-and-vinegar as they've always been. And the sound? It's almost a follow-up to the bawdy rock heard on Modern Problems, but it still retains a pop and punk undercurrent that earned New Grenada comparisons to everybody from Pavement and Dinosaur Jr. to the Buzzcocks and Husker Du. See, still good 'ole New Grenada, with just a few new tricks up their sleeve. This release is a real CD, not CD-R and is available with 4 different collectable covers. May I suggest you collect them all?

V/A /   LETTING YOU DOWN AGAIN: LO-FI VS DEPECHE MODE
DETAILS: ASA061  /  CDR  /  $6
RELEASED: February 5th, 2008
DESCRIPTION: Hey, let's have a black celebration! We are proud to release the second installment in our Vs. Series, Letting You Down Again: Lo-Fi vs Depeche Mode. It's less a tribute record and more like a fight to the death. Possibly conceived back in 1995, when I was using Depeche Mode lyrics (I Want You Now to be specific) to convince girls to fall in love with me. Seven years later, I decide to start a compilation series featuring lo-fi bands covering the bands I adored in high school, the only ones that ever really matter. The compilation features 20 covers with varying degrees of tape hiss, plus comes dressed in black, inside a felt pouch. Also comes with a special black felt 1" button.

THE PATHWAYS /   GRAY BLAZE
DETAILS: ASA057  /  CDR  /  $5
RELEASED: February 6, 2007
DESCRIPTION: Gray Blaze is the second album by New York City’s The Pathways, and the first to be released on Asaurus. You may know lead singer David Yourdon from his solo project Winter Vacation; the Pathways are his main job, and what they lack in vacation time they make up for in benefits. Gray Blaze, recorded and mixed by Jed Smith (My Teenage Stride) at the band’s former practice space in Brooklyn, continues the creative pop leanings of 2005’s Boat of Confidence (Recommended If You Like Records) but is a slower, prettier, darker affair, with longer instrumental passages and more cursing. It is to be enjoyed with a half glass of whiskey, and a picture of someone you claim to love.

SINKCHARMER /   VEGETABLE FARMER
DETAILS: ASA056  /  CDR  /  $5
RELEASED: January 16, 2007
DESCRIPTION: Vegetable Farmer is the 4th full release by Sinkcharmer but their first for Asaurus. Documenting the transition from full band back to a party of one, the record jumps from the indie pop snark of songs like 'The Devil Got Sent to Georgia' to the full on ape rock of 'Split the Difference'. During the writing and recording of Vegetable Farmer, Paul Sinkcharmer began working the soil on his wife's family farm and selling vegetables at the local farmer's market. We'd give you fresh vegetables with this record, but sadly, their heirlooms aren't made to ship well.

THE MATHLETES /   FORT AWESOME
DETAILS: ASA054  /  CDR  /  $5
RELEASED: July 18, 2006
DESCRIPTION: Joe Mathlete, Cassie O’Presets, and Robot McGee have sonically captured the exact point where computers and crayons intersect, and transferred it into a compact collection of unassumingly absurdist anthems and attention deficit disco. RIYL: Fuzz, beeps, fuzzy beeps, dancing inside your head, growing diagonally rather than growing up, songs with choruses.

RELEASED: April 7th, 2006
DESCRIPTION: Pants Yell's sophomore album is a co-release between The Paper Cities and Asaurus Records. As with Songs for Siblings, this record was recorded with Tim Shea (Black Helicopter) at his Analog Divide studio. These 11 songs show the next level of Pants Yell!, with lush arrangements and vocals and unexpected twists and turns in the songwriting, all while maintaining a clever simplicity akin to The Clean or the Pastels. LA GUERRE DES TUQUES /   S/T
DETAILS: ASA050  /  CDR  /  $4
RELEASED: February 21st, 2006
DESCRIPTION: Aesthetically, the debut from La Guerre des Tuques follows the marching band tradition of organization and preparedness and the d.i.y. ribbon of intuition and simplicity. Musically, La Guerre des Tuques is rather void. Attempts were made towards The Make Up, The Montage, and Friend’s-era Beach Boys, while successes were found mostly in the vein of a moody and sullen Ohio Express or a technically improficient and thematically limited Aja-era Steely Dan. Features members of the Diskettes and the Parka 3.

RELEASED: December 20th, 2005
DESCRIPTION: This is it! The debut full-length from the already beloved Ponies in the Surf. Camille & Alexander have always thought their songs are best suited for 3 AM or early afternoon, since those are often the moods they're trying to recapture in sound. You know, like when you have an epiphany while washing dishes late at night after all your friends have gone home? These thirteen songs form the perfect record for the winter months, even though you'll find it suits the summertime just as well.

RELEASED: September 27th, 2005
DESCRIPTION: The Tiny Whispers EP was written and recorded late 2004 - early 2005. All songs were written and recorded for the memory of Josephine Garcia. The idea was to record five songs that sounded worn, mournful, and rejoyceful.

THE PIZAZZ /   THEY LIVE
DETAILS: ASA046  /  CDR  /  $4
RELEASED: September 27th, 2005
DESCRIPTION: A collection of early four-track recordings from Detroit's Pizazz. Some might argue that the Pizazz hasn't been around long enough to justify an 'early four-track recordings' collection. COLIN CLARY /   SWEATER WEATHER OR NOT, THESE ARE THE SONGS I GOT
DETAILS: ASA043  /  CDR  /  $5
RELEASED: June 7th, 2005
DESCRIPTION: This is a pretty awesome record featuring fifteen straight-up pop songs chock full of tenderclever kindness and sweet-hearted melodic goodness, all in an unassuming home-recorded style. Bedroom symphonies and scrappy lil' numbers, side by side for 26 minutes of gentle-fi indiepop. You'll hear Colin singing with a sincerity that can be comforting, though it scares some and is sometimes sad, too. You'll like what this record does to your ears and to your sense of possibility. ELLIOTT THE LETTER OSTRICH /   BLOOD CAPE
DETAILS: ASA042  /  CDR  /  $5
RELEASED: Friday May 13th, 2005
DESCRIPTION: Castlevania rock sensations Jhohn and Airon, also known as Elliott the Letter Ostrich, emerged from a black mass ceremony. Eight newborn goats were chosen to perform this ritual. The details are vague at this time. Some say the blood from the animals were mixed with Casios and an abandoned Nintendo Entertainment System. Perhaps more gruesome details about the birth or death of Elliott the Letter Ostrich will emerge in the year 1986. Until then, Blood Cape's caked in blood pop songs are the only record of these events we have. Is this over-the-top enough for you?

BLACK SPARTACUS /   ANDROMEDA
DETAILS: ASA025  /  CDR  /  $5
RELEASED: September 22nd, 2003
DESCRIPTION: Written while immersed in study in the vast and hilly countryside of Western New York, Andromeda was conceived as an epic narrative and glib meditation on the vastness of space and space exploration. Employing a structural parabola inspired by the all-too-real experiences of the original seven Mercury astronauts, Andromeda presents the tale of a classical hero faced with serious decisions regarding the future of life on Earth, as well as the slightly less important topics of love, metaphysics, and track and field. In other words, rock 'n' roll with a twist.

V/A /   FALL 2002 SAMPLER
DETAILS: ASA005  /  CDR  /  $1
RELEASED: September 24th, 2002
DESCRIPTION: The original sampler that helped launch Asaurus. To help promote our more-or-less nonexistant label, we offered this sampler, during the Spring, Summer, and Fall of 2002, to anyone who'd ask for it. This classic contains tracks from all the bands on the original Asaurus roster. Still assembled the same as the first: construction paper and love. Oh, and glue.

DETAILS: ASA004  /  CDR  /  $4
RELEASED: October 2nd, 2002
DESCRIPTION: Songs written during 2001-2002, about midnight games of backgammon, playing guitar on rooftops, drinking homemade wine. Things like that. Rumor has it this might be the record that Asaurus was started for. Not known for, but started for.

TRACKLISTING: Reverie / Huroc / It's That Long, Yeah...Whatever / Just Like You / Same Lives, Different Cities / Wise Fools / I Dream in the Third Person / A Teacup for L / Rubbies

DETAILS: ASA003  /  CDR  /  $3
RELEASED: Early 2002
DESCRIPTION: Between 1995 and 2000, Monotone recorded 3 tapes worth of basement four-track experiments, some of which resembled actual music, by combining untuned guitars, kiddie keyboards, and really bad singing. Is it mysterious or just boring? Could possibly be used for blackmail purposes.
